This Farmers’ Market Is Shaping Up
To Be ‘Berry’ Special


It’s strawberry season at our Farmers’ Market! You are going to be amazed at these beautiful strawberries, fresh-picked and bursting with flavor. Whether you eat them unadorned, drizzled with a little balsamic or in the tasty dessert suggested below, you will marvel at the difference local food makes! Besides being super delicious, strawberries are loaded with antioxidants and are pretty darn good for your ticker too!

Stop by the Hunterdon Land Trust Farmers’ Market at the Dvoor Farm Sunday between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. for strawberries and much more including steaks, artisanal sausages, chicken, pies, honey, bread, cheese, freshly ground spices, native plants and much more.

They also have a retail store, Stony Brook Gardens, located off route 31 in Pennington that features a tremendous selection of landscape plants, fine gardening tools, unusual garden ornaments, gifts, pottery, statuary, and a wonderful selection of perennial and annual plants.

Recipe

Strawberry Shortcake Recipe

2/3 cup sugar
1/4 cup shortening
1 large egg
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/4 teaspoon salt
1-1/2 cups all-purpose flour
2 teaspoons baking powder
1/2 cup milk
Whipped cream
1-1/2 quarts fresh or frozen strawberries, sliced

In a bowl, cream sugar and shortening. Add egg and vanilla; beat well. Combine dry ingredients and add alternately with milk to the creamed mixture. Spread in a greased 9-in. square baking pan. Bake at 350° for 20-25 minutes. Cool on wire rack.

Cut into nine servings. Split each serving horizontally and fill with whipped cream and strawberries. Replace top of cake; garnish with more berries and a dollop of whipped cream. Serve immediately. Yield: 9 servings.
