Apple, Pear Tasting at Farmers’ Market

applesCome sample the area’s best apples and pears at our Farmers’ Market, open this Sunday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Dvoor Farm, 111 Mine St. in Raritan Township.

What’s New

Celebrate fall’s arrival by sampling an assortment of local apples and pears our farmers will be selling. These local fruits will likely be available for sampling:
Comeback Farm (all organic) — Liberty apples, Asian Pears and Seckel Pears.
Phillips Farms — Brown Asian Pears, Green Asian Pears, Bartlett Pears, Golden Asian Pears. It will also offer the following apples: Honeycrisp, Ambrosia, Winesap, Jonagold, Crispin (Mutsu), Red Delicious, Sonata (also known as a Pinova), Cameo, Macoun, Golden Delicious, Gala, Suncrisp, Empire and Fuji.
Sweet Valley — The following apples: Honeycrisp, Macoun, Cortland, Empire and Jonathan.
This is the perfect opportunity to try some local apples and discover a new favorite for a healthy snack or decadent dessert.

Apple-Berry Brown Betty

What You’ll Need:

4 Golden Delicious apples, peeled, cored and cut into 3/4-inch pieces
2 cups blackberries
1/3 cup granulated sugar
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg
Finely grated zest and juice of 1/2 lemon
2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
1 cup crushed sugar cones (about 6 cones)
1/2 cup packed light brown sugar
1/2 cup chopped almonds
1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
Vanilla ice cream or whipped cream, for topping (optional)

What To Do:

— Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Butter a 1 1/2-quart baking dish. Toss the apples, blackberries, granulated sugar, 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon, 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg, the lemon zest and juice, flour and 4 tablespoons melted butter in a large bowl.
— In another bowl, combine the cones, brown sugar, the remaining 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon and 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg, the almonds, salt and the remaining 4 tablespoons melted butter.
— Pour half of the apple-berry mixture into the prepared baking dish. Scatter half of the cone mixture on top. Spread the remaining apple-berry mixture on top, then sprinkle with the remaining cone mixture.
— Bake until the apples are soft and the topping is golden brown, 40 to 45 minutes. Transfer the dish to a rack and let sit 10 minutes before serving. Top with ice cream or whipped cream, if desired.
