Drive or Bike to the Farmers’ Market Sunday!


Get your week off to a terrific start by picking up some healthy food at the Farmers’ Market and enjoying a cycling tour of Hunterdon County.

bike day photo reducedOn Sunday, we will host our second annual Cycling Day in partnership with HART and author Michael Heffler. Cyclists will leave from the Farmers’ Market at either 8:30 or 9 a.m. to enjoy the beautiful farms and fields of Hunterdon County. Three different levels of bike rides are offered: Advanced riders will cover 50 miles from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. while less experienced riders can choose between a 30-mile ride leaving at 8:30 a.m. and a 25-mile ride leaving at 9 a.m, with both returning at noon.

Rides will be hosted by Heffler, Laura Lynch from Princeton Free Wheelers and Rick Simon of the Central Bucks Biking Club. HART,  a nonprofit group dedicated to promoting sustainable transportation in Hunterdon County, will provide bike safety information and free bike maintenance checks. Pete’s Bike Shoppe in Flemington will also visit the market with local bike maps and information. Anyone interested in cycling is welcome to participate.

After the cycling event, Heffler will sign copies of his book Climbing Through Life: A Collection of Hilly Vignettes. “You get to the prettiest places around here by climbing hills,” said Heffler. “The hilly vignettes in the book were written to help you enjoy the climb.”

Cyclists who have gotten a taste of the beautiful views of Hunterdon County are welcome to get a taste of the area’s best produce and meats from the local farmers who’ll be on hand with their incredible assortment of fresh produce, beef, cheeses, breads, honey, wine and more.

The product for the week is corn, and we here’s a fantastic way to prepare it:

Corn and Black Bean SalsaSONY DSC

Ingredients:

4 ears of corn, cooked and stripped of corn kernels
2 cans of black beans, rinsed and drained
2 medium tomatoes, seeded and chopped
1 medium red onion, chopped
¾ cup of fresh cilantro
4 jalapeno peppers, seeded and chopped
¼ cup of fresh lime juice
½ tsp of salt

Directions: In a very large bowl combine the ingredients. Cover and refrigerate until ready to serve. Serve with tortilla chips.

Nutritional Facts:

1/4 cup (calculated without chips) equals 34 calories, trace fat (trace saturated fat), 0 cholesterol, 118 mg sodium, 6 g carbohydrate, 1 g fiber, 1 g protein.
