Cantaloupe made its first appearance at our market last Sunday, and we’re celebrating its return with a pair of delicious recipes (see below). If you didn’t get the chance to pick up a few yet, we encourage you to do so and discover how much better local cantaloupe tastes! Stop by and see us Sunday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Dvoor Farm, 111 Mine St. off the route 12 circle in Raritan Township.

What’s New

Adam Wengryn from Restoration Technologies visits the market to chat about the work being done at the Dvoor Farm to convert the old wagon shed into a rustic classroom. He’ll also have a display set up near the site of the classroom to show you our plans.

Also, we just want to remind you that a new vendor recently joined us. Nine Acre Farm out of Skillman grows artisanal sunflowers, which are just spectacular. Stop by the farm’s new booth to see its beautiful flowers.

Recipe

You can do some pretty darn interesting things with a cantaloupe besides cutting it in half, dropping it in a bowl and grabbing a spoon. Check out these two delicious recipes. One’s a soup for the entire family to enjoy; the second is an adult libation that’s refreshing and delicious!

Cantaloupe Soup

cantaloupe soupWhat You’ll Need:
1 large, or 2 small, cantaloupe (to yield 3 tightly-packed cups sliced cantaloupe)
3 lemons, juiced
1 cup sparkling cider (nonalcoholic)
2 to 3 teaspoons granulated sugar, optional
1/4 cup cold water, optional
1 small cucumber, peeled, seeded and diced
Kosher salt
Freshly ground black pepper

What To Do:
— Place the cantaloupes on a flat surface and split them in half. Scoop out and discard the seeds. Use a spoon to scoop out the flesh in small increments. The goal is to tightly pack 3 cups of cantaloupe flesh.
— Place the cantaloupe in the blender and add the lemon juice and cider. Puree until smooth and taste for seasoning. Add the sugar, if needed. Use the water if more liquid is needed. Pour the soup into a medium bowl. Make an ice bath to chill the soup by combining some ice cubes and cold water in the bottom of a larger bowl. Put the soup in the ice bath and store in the refrigerator until ready to serve.
— Season the cucumber lightly with salt and pepper. When ready to serve, pour the soup into the chilled bowls and add some of the cucumber to each.

Cantaloupe Martini

Canteloupe-Martini-1What You’ll Need:
1 cup cold water
12 ou. fresh cantaloupe
1 tablespoon honey
Juice of one lime (please use fresh lime juice)
Cantaloupe balls for garnish
Melon vodka

What To Do:
— Add water, cantaloupe, honey and lime into a blender and puree until liquid. Strain into a measuring cup.
— Fill a cocktail shaker with ice cubes. Pour in 1 part melon vodka to 2 parts cantaloupe juice per drink. Shake vigorously until it’s exceedingly cold. You might consider putting a dishtowel around the shaker to get it extra chilly. Pour into chilled martini glasses. Spear melon balls and serve atop glass.
